(This might go to wishlist)
Is there a way to set a time(size) limit when rendering and thus render in incremented files ??
Is there a (linux)tool to split a video file after rendition ??
Or do I have to make multiple projects from my too long original one ??

I am not aware that we offer this functionality.

If you wish for your file to be less than 1 GB, then check the lengt in seconds, and use a suitable bitrate... Its a bit complicated, but doable :-)

You can select and render a portion of your film.

You have 2 options to render only a part of your project:

1) Use guides. You can create a guide by right clicking in the timeline ruler. The guide will be added at the position of the timeline cursor. Create as many guides as you want, and then in the Render dialog you can decide to render the zone between 2 guides ("Guide zone").

2) You can use the timeline zone (green line in timeline ruler). You can move it either by dragging its ends or by using the monitor buttons ("set zone start" and "set zone end") which are the 2 icons on the left of the monitor, then select "Selected Zone" in the Render dialog
