Dvgrab

Dvgrab is a firewire toolkit used by Kdenlive to grab video from camcorders. It is compatible with DV and HDV comcorders and and is very well maintained.
Ffmpeg audio and video libraries and codecs

FFmpeg is a complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and video. It includes libavcodec, the leading audio/video codec library.
Frei0r video effects plugins

Frei0r is a minimalistic plugin API for video sources and filters. The intent is to solve the recurring reimplementation or adaptation issue of standard effects.
Gimp

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. Gimp integrates very well in Kdenlive environment, as Kdenlive is able to read Gimp images.
KDE desktop environment

KDE is an international technology team that creates Free Software for desktop and portable computing. Kdenlive uses KDE libraries but can also run under Gnome environment.
Libquicktime

This is the home of libquicktime, a library for reading and writing quicktime/avi/mp4 files. It provides convenient access to quicktime files with a variety of supported codecs. libquicktime is in no way related to the original quicktime software, which can be found here. You should not expect all quicktime files created by original software to be playable by libquicktime or vice versa. You might, however, be lucky in some cases.

SoX is a cross-platform (Linux, MacOS X, etc.) command line utility that can convert various formats of computer audio files in to other formats.
Synfig Studio

Free software/open source tool for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources. A good way to make short animations for Kdenlive.
