Dirac is an advanced royalty-free video compression format designed for a wide range of uses, from delivering low-resolution web content to broadcasting HD and beyond, to near-lossless studio editing.
The BBC has always advocated open standards, and has tried to use them where possible. So far, streaming has been dominated by proprietary systems and existing licensing regimes for standards-based systems have not been as attractive as they might be for large-scale broadcasting, particularly for Public Service broadcasters.
Kdenlive plans to use Dirac as soon as it is possible to use ogg mutex and dirac/schroedinger in ffmpeg, which should be the case shortly. Stay tuned.
