Summary0000297: MOV / AVI files crashing Kdenlive and showing up with incorrect sound previews
DescriptionI'm having no trouble at all with mpg files, but bringing in AVI's and MOV's are producing a very predicatable crash.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Open Kdenlive (0.7 r2529)
2. Click the "Add clip icon" and select a mov / avi. occasionally this will be enough to cause a crash.
3. Drag the clip to the timeline. occasionally this will be enough to cause a crash.
4. Move the clip in the timeline or scroll the time marker over the clip. This will cause a crash.

NOTE: The clip seems to be fine in it's video preview thumbnail, however the audio waveform preview always seems to be squashed into the first half of the video. See sceengrab attached along with gdb output for a mov and an avi.

Could this be the same issue as
http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=173 [^] ?
Could you try the workaround there?

Thanks.

Seems to be different. Turning off all previews (Video and Audio) doesn't seem to make any difference.

OK, in r2624, I can now add this file to the timeline and move it without problems. Without fail though, it's still crashing Kdenlive any time the cursor goes beyond a certain point. For example on the testing file uploaded at http://projects.zeno.thinkhost.com/kdenlive/gum_drops_01.avi [^] it crashes anytime after 00:00:26:00. (WARNING: It's nearly 50mb, but it was the smallest AVI I had). Even switching to the record tab instead of project window preview still crashes Kdenlive.

Backtrace is attached as avi_crash_r2624.txt.

I just noticed that ffplay isn't able to play past this point when called directly by CLI, so I'm guessing that it's an ffmpeg issue, however it would still be nice if it didn't crash the whole system.

Not sure if this is a different bug or related, but another file I have (a .mov) doesn't crash anything, but also seems to have all its sound "squashed" into the first half of the video (even with audio+video thumbnails turned off).

It plays absolutely fine in ffplay, but has the sound permanently maxed for the first 1/2 then nothing for the second in inigo. This file is available at:

Oh, how I yearn for the days of working on Kino when all I had to worry about was DV. Addressing this kinds of bugs is the long haul. We will never be able to support everything especially with all the interop issues introduced by the multitude of software.

I reproduced the issue wth pp009.MOV. I will look into it. I see it using 8-bit audio, and even though we have attempted to upscale it to 16-bit, it is more than likely untested.

Thanks Dan. You're a legend.

It would kind of make sense, too that if the app was expecting 16bits and getting 8 that it would come out 1/2 the length and squashed at the start.

I suspect that even if we can't support everything, that just accurately notifying users when something's unsupported and possibly suggesting that they transcode it with another tool would be better than it opening "corrupted". We could also suggest that DV / HDV are Kdenlives "preferred" formats, much as Cinelerra has Quicktime as their preferred format.

Hi Dan,

I tried to confirm this fix. Audio thumbnails seem to have the sound correctly spaced out now, however it still crashes shortly after dragging to the timeline (see "8bit_sound" backtrace attached).

I'm having trouble detecting if I have libacodec or not, and if so what version. There's no remotely similar looking package in the Kubuntu 8.10 repo's. Is this something built by the KBW?

Googling seems to suggest some link to Mplayer, of which I have version 1.0-rc2 and my other versions are:

I tested with the clip named pp009.MOV and with WAV files I made myself using ffmpeg. libavcodec is a part of ffmpeg. Make sure the wizard is set to clean sources.

Unfortunately, the backtrace you uploaded is useless.

Another bug report in the mailing list helped me find a repro case. I believe this is now fixed in MLT r1244.

Fix tested and confirmed. Another evil bug falls before the awesome powers of "Lightning Dan's" MLT Foo!

Thanks Dan. :)
